Capacity Building for District and Provincial Hospitals in the Philippines

Capacity Building for District and Provincial Hospitals in the Philippines

Promoting the capacity of district and provincial hospitals and strengthening the emergency referral system between hospitals.

  • Project Period: April 2018 to December 2020
  • Beneficiaries: The medical personnel in district and provincial hospitals and local residents
  • Target Area: Philippines Region 6 (Western Visayas Region)
  • Project Background: District/provincial hospitals (public hospitals) and private hospitals coexist in the central Western Visayas region of the Philippines. The quality of the medical services provided by private hospitals is very high, but these services are more expensive than that of the relatively cheap public health facilities, so the majority of residents rely on the public hospitals. However, district and provincial hospitals are not functioning effectively due to a poor health data collection and management system and the lack of appropriate programs for non-infectious diseases (cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, etc.). These infectious diseases are the main cause of death of the residents in the Western Visayas region. In addition, many hospitals are unable to deliver emergency patients on time because of a shortage of ambulances.
  • Project Goals
    - To strengthen the delivery system of district and provincial hospitals through health education of the medical personnel
    - To strengthen the hospital surveillance system by improving the hospital data management system
    - To enhance the public hospital referral system through an ambulance provision
